Underwater Thruster FAQ: How to Choose the Right Thrust, KV Rating, and Voltage
Choosing the right underwater thruster requires considering your application, load, desired speed, runtime, and battery voltage. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions to help you select the right underwater propulsion system.
1. How Do I Choose the Right Underwater Thruster?
Before choosing an underwater thruster, consider the following factors:
-
Operating environment: Will you use it in freshwater or saltwater?
-
Load capacity: What is the total weight of the vessel, passengers, and equipment?
-
Desired speed: What speed do you want to achieve?
-
Runtime: How long does the thruster need to operate on a single charge?
-
Battery voltage: What voltage battery do you plan to use?
-
Budget: What is your budget for the complete propulsion system?
Providing this information will help us recommend a suitable thruster model and compatible accessories for your application.
2. How Do I Choose the Right KV Rating for the U92 Pro?
The APISQUEEN U92 Pro is available in different KV versions to accommodate different battery voltages and application requirements. The following ranges can be used as an initial reference:
-
150KV: Approximately 24–29V
-
250KV: Approximately 12–16V
Choose the appropriate version based on your battery's operating voltage, then compare the thrust, power, and current specifications to determine which model best meets your needs.
These voltage ranges are preliminary selection references. Always confirm the permitted operating range for the specific model before use.
KV represents the motor's rotational speed constant. A higher KV rating does not automatically mean greater thrust.
3. Can I Use a 12V Battery with the 24V U92 Pro?
Yes. The 24V U92 Pro can operate with a compatible 12V power supply, provided the operating conditions meet the product requirements. However, the lower voltage will generally result in reduced motor speed and thrust.
Important: The 12V U92 Pro must not be connected directly to a 24V power supply. Its maximum permitted voltage is 16.8V. Exceeding this limit may damage the motor or built-in ESC.
Always check the exact model and its specified voltage range before connecting a battery.
4. What Is the Difference Between CW and CCW Propellers? Do They Determine Motor Rotation?
CW and CCW generally refer to clockwise and counterclockwise rotation, respectively. The exact direction depends on the viewing reference specified by the manufacturer.
The motor's forward and reverse rotation is typically controlled by a compatible ESC. For propulsion systems that support bidirectional operation, the motor's rotation direction can be changed through the appropriate control signal.
Therefore, a CW or CCW propeller designation does not necessarily mean that the motor can rotate in only one direction. Always confirm compatibility between the propeller, motor, and ESC.
5. How Do I Choose the Right ESC for an Underwater Thruster?
When selecting an electronic speed controller (ESC), pay attention to the following specifications:
-
Operating voltage: The ESC must support your battery's operating voltage.
-
Continuous current rating: The ESC must handle the motor's actual current requirements under the intended operating conditions.
-
Control signal: Confirm compatibility with your control system, such as PWM or another supported interface.
-
Direction control: Choose a bidirectional ESC if forward and reverse operation are required.
-
Cooling and waterproofing: Make sure the ESC is suitable for its intended installation environment.
Do not choose an ESC based solely on its peak current rating. Pay particular attention to its continuous current capacity and cooling requirements.
